Dorai Dish Rack Review – Worth The Buy? [2021]

Dorai Dish Rack

Skipping the dishwasher? Then you are probably washing dishes by hand. We totally get that, sometimes, there are dishes that either don’t fit in the dishwasher or require a bit more effort to clean.

But as you start to hand-wash dishes, you’ll quickly realize that you need a place to store your clean dishes. This can be a problem, especially if you have a single-sided sink.

You could choose to use a wire bin with a towel under it or just the towel itself. But the wire bin can rust and eventually snap, potentially breaking your dishes in the process. Towels will require frequent washing to prevent the build-up of mold, using up both time and resources.

Wire bins and towels are nice in a pinch but require constant cleaning and replacements. And when you are busy and don’t have a moment to spare, it can feel like a drag.

Fortunately, there may be a solution: The Dorai Dish Rack.

The Dorai Dish Rack is the modern way to dry hand-washed dishes. This drying system promises to provide a high-quality experience, but does this claim stack up? And is this product actually good for the environment?

We will answer these questions and more in this review. We’ll go over the basics of the system as well as the pros and cons. At the end, we will conclude with a final rating.

So without further delay, let’s jump right into the review!

Dorai Dish Rack – Comprehensive Review

Dorai Dish Rack – The Basics

So, what exactly is the Dorai Dish Rack?

The Dorai Dish Rack is a dish drying rack made from modern steel. It can be placed on both small and large countertops. It comes with a drying mat that is made out of diatomaceous earth (basically fossilized algae); this mat is referred to as a diomat.

The diomat is fitted to be placed directly beneath the drying rack. The mat and the rack are not connected together can be used separately. However, it’s recommended that you keep them bundled together for optimal use.

You can get the Dorai Dish Rack bundle with accessories included (at a discount) or just the basic dish rack + diomat combo. The accessory purchase will include 1 knife holder, 2 sets of bottle or cup holders, and 1 utensil cage.

You can also choose to purchase the accessories individually if you don’t want to bundle them with the Dorai Dish Rack.

The dimensions for the dish drying rack are shown below:

  • Length: 22.52 inches // 57.2 cm
  • Width: 16.54 inches // 42 cm
  • Height 6.34 inches // 16.1 cm

Cost:

  • $100 for the dish drying rack and diomat only.
  • $160 for the dish drying rack and diomat + accessories.

As of 01/27/21, the Dorai Dish Rack + Accessories is going for a discounted price of $135 + an extra crossbar included for free.

You can also choose to do 3 monthly payments of $45 (no interest).

How Is It Eco-Friendly?

Now, let’s us be the first to say this: washing dishes by hand is NOT the best way to conserve water. Any energy-star rated dishwasher can use as little as 3 gallons of water compared to washing dishes by hand, which uses up to 27 gallons.

But we recognize that there are instances where you cannot use a dishwasher. In that case, using the right dish drying system will go a long way towards helping the environment.

Plastic dish bins are both gross and ineffective, as water can build up and help generate bacterial colonies as well as mold. Not to mention that when it’s time to toss them, they end up sitting in a landfill for hundreds of years. Worse, they could end up in natural environments and do some real harm.

Wire bins and towels have their uses, as stated before, but they too aren’t very convenient and require constant upkeep/replacements. Wire bins can rust if they aren’t made of the right metal, and towels require frequent washing to prevent mold buildup.

And since the average laundry cycle consumes 15 to 30 gallons of water, we should all make an effort to reduce how many loads you need to do in general.

The Dorai Dish Rack is made of durable, modern steel and comes with a mat made from diatomaceous earth. The use of this steel ensures that it will not rust over time, extending its longevity. You can use this dish drying rack for years without it needing to replace it, which cuts down on unnecessary waste.

You can also recycle the drying rack once you are finished with it.

Diatomaceous earth, or DE, is made from fossilized algae. This material is 100% natural, organic, and does not contain any synthetics or chemicals. It also does not wear down easily, allowing it to keep up with the drying rack for just as long if not longer.

How DE Works

The Dorai Dish Rack exemplifies that 3 Rs very well:

  1. Reduce (only have to buy it once)
  2. Reuse (can be used as often as needed for years)
  3. Recycle (dish drying rack can be recycled)

It’s clear that Dorai Home (the company behind the Dorai Dish Rack, the Dorai Bath Stone, and the Dorai Dish Pad) cares about being good to the environment. That’s the kind of care that we can get behind!

Pros

Alright, let’s talk about what makes this product amazing.

PROS
– The steel is durable and holds a variety of dishes well.
– The diomat evaporates water VERY quickly.
– The accessories can be used with a variety of utensils.

– The dish rack has a built-in cutting board holder.
– The entire set-up is eco-chic and fits in any modern kitchen.
– The dish rack + diomat are Prop 65 approved.

As stated before, the dish rack is made of durable steel. This steel does not rust and is designed to last years. Once you have it, you know that you’ll have it for a long, long time.

The rack uses a flatter design with medium-sized gaps between the railings. This allows you to place a wider variety of dishes onto the rack with ease, unlike with dish racks that instead have tall slots. There is also a built-in cutting board holder that frees up space for other dishes.

The gaps also allow water to run off into the water to easily fall onto the diotmat, which does a surprisingly good job of evaporating the water. It starts evaporating within just seconds of being exposed to water.

This is definitely the best part about the Dorai Dish Rack. The mat can hold up to 150% of its weight in water, so you don’t have to worry about oversaturating it unless you dump a ton of water on it.

The diomat doesn’t require much maintenance, but there are two things you should keep in mind.

  1. If the diomat is stained, its ability to evaporate won’t be affected. To remove light stains, gently buff them out with sandpaper. For larger stains, bleach or hydrogen peroxide will remove them.
  2. If the diomat DOES become oversaturated, it will impede its ability to evaporate water and possibly start generating mold (albeit at a MUCH slower rate). You can prevent this by leaving the diomat against a wall until it returns to its original color, which signals that it is ready to be used again.

As for the accessories, they are a nice side addition. You can hold a few different types of utensils in them, including cups, whisks, and spatulas.

There is even a knife holder that can hold up to 2 knives, encasing them in a protective sheath while still allowing them to dry. For those of you with kids, this is a great way to prevent accidents due to overly-curious children.

As for how it looks, we believe that it’s certainly pleasing to the eye. Often described as “eco-chic”, the Dorai Dish Rack looks great in any modern kitchen. For those of you with granite countertops, this rack compliments them well.

Finally, the Dorai Dish Rack is Prop 65 approved.

What does this mean? Here’s a quick explanation:

“Dorai products have passed Prop 65 testing and been screened for over 174 substances of very high concern (SVHC) with no detectable substances found. Our products use food grade Diatomaceous Earth, silicone, aluminum, and other non-toxic, long-lasting materials.”

Excerpt from Dorai Home FAQ

Basically, this dish rack doesn’t contain anything that could harmful to you. It passes the strict requirements necessary to be Prop 65 approved. It’s proof that you don’t need damaging chemicals or synthetics to get the job done.

So far, we are definitely impressed with this dish rack. If you want to check it out for yourself, you can click the button below and see what the hype is all about.

Cons

We’ve talked about the good, but we also must address the bad. Here are some things that aren’t so great regarding the Dorai Dish Rack.

CONS
– The dish rack can only hold a limited number of dishes.
– The accessories can only hold a limited number of utensils.
– It is pricey
.

For starters, this dish rack is on the smaller side. You won’t be able to effectively fit more than a few pots and pans on it, though you could add more plates by themselves.

This may not be ideal for homes that generate large amounts of dishes often, as you’ll find yourself stacking dishes to compensate. This can trap water between the dishes, invalidating the diomat altogether.

The accessories also share this problem. They can only how a few extra cups, knives, and other utensils at a time. To be honest, this small savings in space may not be worth the additional cost.

We say this because this dish rack is already on the expensive side. While most eco-friendly goods tend to cost more than their non-eco-friendly counterparts, it doesn’t change the fact that this dish rack retails for a minimum of $100.

We believe that you get what you pay for. The Dorai Dish Rack is a high-quality, eco-friendly product. If it’s in your budget, then we believe that you would benefit from having this product.

Conclusion

So, is the Dorai Dish Rack worth the buy?

We say yes! This definitely worth the buy.

The Dorai Dish Rack is unique in how it’s designed to dry your dishes. The look, feel, and effectiveness of this dish rack make it a solid purchase for anyone looking to adopt a more eco-friendly way of living.

If we had to give it a number, we would give it a solid 9.0 out of 10.

We aren’t alone in this assessment, either. Other people also love this dish drying rack.

  1. How does this hold up with those of us who have well water? I get a lot of calcium deposits due to not having my water softener working for some time now. I don’t have an iron issue. Would I have to scrub it often to remove the calcium and do you think it would easily come off because it’s a pain on a normal basis.

    1. Hi Stephanie,

To be honest, I’m not sure how calcium deposits would manifest on the dish rack if it manifested at all. Diatomaceous earth (the material used to make the dish rack) is comprised primarily of silica and contains a small number of other minerals including calcium. It’s usually used to remove calcium deposits due to its abrasive nature in its raw material form.
