25+ Best Biodegradable & Eco-Friendly Dog Poop Bags of 2023

Traditional dog poop bags are useful in practice, but their impact on the environment is anything but good.

Think about it. You are wrapping an organic waste material in a plastic bag that won’t decompose for decades, if not centuries. The dog poop won’t be able to properly decompose inside of that bag. And if the bag ends up in an anaerobic (no air) environment like a landfill, it’ll almost never biodegrade.

So, what’s an easy-to-substitute greener alternative? Biodegradable and eco-friendly dog poop bags, that’s what!

Biodegradable and compostable dog poop bags are great because, in the right conditions, they’ll break down over the course of 90 to 180 days. That’s a lot better than hundreds of years!

Dog poop bags that are not biodegradable but still eco-friendly (made from recycled materials, for example) help keep Mother Nature clean and healthy. And a healthy environment means a better world to live in!

But there are TONS of eco-friendly dog poop bags, some of which try to use fancy marketing to trick you into thinking they are greener than they actually are.

To help you find the perfect biodegradable and/or eco-friendly dog poop bags, we compiled this comprehensive list of the 60+ best biodegradable and eco-friendly dog poop bags of 2022. And don’t worry, none of these bags are guilty of greenwashing.

We’ll give you our top 10 recommended picks first so that you know exactly what has our “Ecogradable Stamp of Approval” before giving a brief overview of the runner ups.

So with that said, let’s jump right in. We’ve got a lot to cover!

25+ Best Biodegradable and Eco-Friendly Dog Poop Bags of 2022:

1. Give a SH*T Compostable Dog Poop Bags

Key Features:

  • 9 X 13 Inches, Leak-Proof, And Odorless
  • 100% Biodegradable And Compostable. Made From Cornstarch, BPAT (Biodegradable And Compostable Polymer), And Edible Glycerin
  • TÜV AUSTRIA Home Compost, ASTM D6400, And EN 13432 Standard Certified

Pardon the language, but Give a Sh*t Compostable Dog Poop Bags are one of the best brands for pets while still being highly eco-friendly. It’s impressive just how much “green” goodness they packed into these bags.

But before we get into that, we just wanted to highlight that this company donates 10% of ALL profits to the Soi Dog Foundation. The Soi Dog Foundation is a nonprofit organization that aims to take care of stray dogs and cats in Asia, though they have roots in other countries as well.

They are passionate about ending animal suffering around the world and are quickly expanding. If you want to check them out more, click here.Anyways, back to the bags. These bags come in the standard 9 x 13 size and come in that classic lime green color. The raw materials used to make the bags are ethically sourced and sustainable.

These materials include cornstarch (PLA), BPAT (biodegradable and compostable polymer), and safely edible glycerin. We always enjoy seeing an eco-friendly dog poop bag made almost exclusively from natural materials.

These bags also have their certifications in order. They are certified according to TÜV AUSTRIA Home Compost, ASTM D6400, and EN 13432 standards. This means that they have been proven to be as biodegradable/compostable as they claim. And yes, these bags can be composted at home.

As for performance, these dog poop bags don’t pull any punches. They are engineered to a respectably durable 18-micron thickness, which allows it to be thinner yet tougher.

This thickness locks down any odors and provides a leakproof seal that promises to be mess-free. The material is fairly stretchable too, making it good for larger dog breeds’ poop as well (just not too large or too much).

Give a Sh*t goes above the call of duty to make sure that even their packaging box and reel are made from recyclable materials. The kind of attention to detail makes it clear that this company truly cares about the environment and the ecosystems that inhabit it.

Recent customer reviews have been stellar! Highlights include the bags’ ease of use, sturdiness, flexibility, eco-friendly packaging, softness, and more. It’s honestly a struggle to find out what people don’t like about this biodegradable/compostable dog poop bag.

Speaking critically, there have been a few people that had some issues with the bags. Some people reported that the bags didn’t hold odor as well as they should have. Others claimed that the bags weren’t strong enough for larger dog poop and had issues with tearing.

The company may have an “out-there” name, but their bags are as good as they come. Perfect for small to medium-sized dogs, though can handle some of the larger ones too (within reason).

So if you are looking for a biodegradable dog poop bag that actively supports both the environment and animal life, then you need to check out Give a Sh*t Compostable Dog Poop Bags.

2. PET N PET Biodegradable Dog Poop Bags

Key Features:

  • Light Weight, Unscented, And Odor-Blocking
  • 100% Biodegradable And Compostable. Complies With US ASTM D6954 And Euro EN13432 Standards
  • Made From Cornstarch

PET N PET’s Biodegradable Dog Poop Bag is one of the best choices for eco-friendly, biodegradable dog poop bags. These bags don’t compromise on performance for eco-friendliness, and the reverse is true too. Instead, PET N PET’s Biodegradable Dog Poop Bags achieve excellence in both categories.

The bags are made from cornstarch bio-based materials. This is more commonly known as polylactic acid (PLA), a bioplastic. This material is inherently biodegradable and will degrade within 1 to 2 years on its own.

When composted at home or in an industrial composting facility, these bags will completely break down in just 90 to 180 days. These bags release carbon dioxide and water when they break down instead of “global warming” methane gas that comes from traditional plastic.

They are eco-certified by the U.S. ASTM D6954, OK COMPOST CERT #S1001, and Euro EN13432 standards. This essentially provides further proof for their claims, as these rigorous standards are not easily met.

This batch comes with 240 dog poop bags. The rolls are considered “standard size” and can fit into most dispensers. Considering that the dimensions of the roll are the industry standard, these bags should have no trouble fitting into a dispenser you may already own.

Please note that since PET N PET’s Biodegradable Dog Poop Bags are made from bioplastic, they need to be stored in a cool and dry place. Otherwise, you risk having all of your bags start breaking down prematurely.

Recent customer reviews have extremely favorable. Highlights included the bags’ light weight and great value for money, though it’s on the pricier end in our opinion. People particularly enjoyed the compostable nature of the bag, with previous owners testing them out in their own backyards to great success.

Complaints pointed to the bags’ lack of durability and handles. Some people have claimed with you can accidentally poke a hole in them, though most have had no issues with the bags’ durability. We would like to see some awesome handles in the future, though!

So if you are looking for a tried-n-true biodegradable and compostable dog poop bag, then you need to check out PET N PET’s Biodegradable Dog Poop Bags.

3. UNNI 100% Compostable Dog Poop Bags

Key Features:

  • Durable, Nontoxic, Easy To Use
  • 100% Biodegradable And Compostable. Certified OK Compost Home, Seedling Under European Standard By Vinçotte And Tüv Austria, And ASTM 6400
  • 9 X 13 Inches, Extra Thick 0.8 Mil

UNNI 100% Compostable Dog Poop Bag is another solid addition to the UNNI lineup of biodegradable disposable bags. Like with their other products, UNNI goes above and beyond to give you the best value for the price.

These bags are extra-thick, coming in at 0.8 milliliters. It may not seem like much, but even the smallest increases in thickness can multiply a bag’s durability. The size is pretty standard at 9 x 13 inches.

As for the bag’s composition, it’s made from plant starches (PLA) and doesn’t contain any polyethylene (a common non-degradable plastic when untreated). This means that they are 100% biodegradable and compostable. The bags are also unscented.

What’s nice about this is the fact that they are completely non-toxic. After all, they are only made from plant starches and little else.

When these bags decompose, they turn into humus and release carbon dioxide along with water. No harmful chemicals are released. You can use these bags knowing that they are good for the environment.

Let’s talk about the eco-friendly certifications. UNNI 100% Compostable Dog Poop Bags are certified by OK Compost Home, Seedling Under European Standard By Vinçotte And Tüv Austria, And U.S. ASTM 6400.

This means that these bags can be safely composted at home or in an industrial composting facility. These three certifications are especially important, as it shows that these bags met rigorous standards in three highly-qualified, eco-friendly-focused organizations.

Recent customer reviews have been overall positive. Highlights included the bags’ light weight, non-toxic nature, value for money, and ease of use. People particularly enjoy the bags’ lack of weight, saying that a roll is easy to carry around even on a walk.

Complaints point to the bags’ strange perforation line and lack of durability. People claim that the sticker used to hold the bags together usually ruin one of them when removing them. Other people have stated that the perforation line isn’t where they expect it to be, leading to accidental tears and incomplete rips.

These bags also don’t claim to block odor, and some people have mentioned that the smell can sometimes come through the bag in higher concentrations.

Overall, UNNI’s dog poop bags are pretty good. As a biodegradable dog poop bag, you can’t go wrong with these as long as you don’t mind them being lacking a bit of the “oomph” associated with other brands. Great for smaller dogs and at a low cost.

If that fits you and your dog, then consider checking out UNNI 100% Compostable Dog Poop Bags.

4. Earth Rated Dog Poop Bags, Extra Thick and Strong Poop Bags for Dogs

Key Features:

  • Odor-Blocking Lavender Scent
  • Oxo-Biodegradable With EPI-Technology. Uses Recycled Materials For Packaging And Roll Cores
  • 9 X 13 Inches, Leak-Proof, Durable

Earth Rated Dog Poop Bags are a good option for eco-friendly dog poop bags. They are the king of high-quality consistency and one of the most beloved brands on Amazon.

These bags are 9 x 13 inches, making them a good size for medium to large-sized dogs. This size is also good for small dogs who happen to be fairly regular, though you might want to pick up a smaller size anyway.

The company also offers a 100% leak-proof guarantee, as they are confident in their bag’s durability and ability to hold various levels of moisture. If you aren’t happy with Earth Rated Dog Poop Bag’s performance, you can get a complete refund with relative ease.

But with an average 4.8-star review with 25,642 ratings at the time of writing, that’s probably not going to happen.

You can expect 270 separate bags on 18 rolls. The bags are serrated for easy tearing, meaning no sharp objects are required. Earth Rated Dog Poop Bags also come with an odor-blocking lavender scent. You can keep all of the stinks inside and enjoy a pleasant aroma instead.

Let’s talk about why this dog poop bag is considered eco-friendly. The bags are made with EPI plastic, which lets them break down much faster than traditional plastic.

Also, the packaging and roll cores are made with recycled materials. Using recycled means conserving trees and keeping our environment healthy.

Recent customer reviews have been highly positive. Highlights included the bags’ leak-proof ability, sturdiness, durability, ease of dispensing, pleasant scent, and high value for money.

This product isn’t without criticism, however. Some customers believed that the bag was compostable (likely because it’s green like many other biodegradable products) and was disappointed to find out it wasn’t.

Overall, these bags are absolutely amazing if you are looking to dip your toes in eco-friendly dog poop bags (not literally, please).

While we do wish that they were biodegradable and compostable, EPI plastic and recycled materials still contribute towards a greener cause. We recommend checking them out.

5. Greener Walker Dog Poop Bags

Key Features:

  • 9 X 13 Bags, Durable, And Extra-Thick
  • Assumed Biodegradable And Compostable. Made From Cornstarch And PBAT (Polybutylene Adipate-Co-Terephthalate)
  • Scented Bags

What’s not to love about Greener Walker Dog Poop Bags? They are simple, efficient, and very durable thanks to their composition.

The 9 x 13-inch bags are made from the classic cornstarch blend, which is more eco-friendly than traditional plastic (obviously). They also contain PBAT, a biodegradable thermoplastic copolyester.

PBAT is malleable and very strong. It serves to boost the bags’ durability and holding strength, which it does decently well. Greener Walker Dog Poop Bags are claimed to be 100% leak-proof by the company, which is backed up by many happy customers.

The company also uses recycled materials in its packaging and roll cores, which is always a bonus for the eco-minded!

You also get a ton of value for the price. This product offers 500+ bags for the price that other products would only offer half of the number of bags for.

Keep in mind the green bags ARE scented. Some users reported that the bags were heavily scented, while others reported a lighter scent.

If you enjoy a pleasant aroma instead of the smell of poop, then this would be a boon for you.

If you are sensitive (allergic) to artificial scents, you probably skip these bags.

Unfortunately, Greener Walker Dog Poop Bags don’t have any certification, so it’s unclear to what degree these bags are truly biodegradable and/or compostable. Based on the composition of the bags, we believe that it’s reasonable to assume that they are at least somewhat biodegradable.

User reviews seem to echo our opinion. Users praise the bags’ value for the money and enjoy knowing that they are doing their part in living an eco-friendly lifestyle.

Common complaints highlight the bags’ relative fragility compared to other brands, the difficulty in opening the bags, and the difficulty in separating the bags from each other.

Overall, Greener Walker Dog Poop Bags are good for people who value a great deal for the price. The love from satisfied customers makes them a solid choice. If the value speaks to you, then consider picking up Greener Walker Dog Poop Bags.

6. moonygreen Dog Poop Bags

Key Features:

  • 9 X 13 Inches, Leak-Proof, Durable
  • 100% Biodegradable And Compostable. ASTM D6400, European Standard EN 13432, And OK Compost Home Certified
  • Comes With Reusable Dispenser

Moonygreen Dog Poop Bags are high-quality bags that come with a rather handy accessory. Their bags don’t break many molds, but they excel in the most important aspects a biodegradable & eco-friendly dog poop bag can have.

These bags are made with vegetable-based materials instead of traditional plastic. The bags also don’t have any EPI technology, which is fairly rare. Other eco-friendly bags use EPI technology to produce a type of biodegradable plastic, but moonygreen is focused on producing the most natural dog poop bag possible.

As a result, their bags decompose into only carbon dioxide and water. They are also unscented, meaning you don’t have to deal with strong artificial smells that could agitate allergies.

No micro-plastics, no chemical leaks, nothing like that. It’s refreshing to see a dog poop bag that goes all-out when it comes to looking out for the environment.

It’s important to note that these bags still use eco-friendly polymers, another type of biodegradable plastic. They are considered “better” than EPI plastic, but it would be misleading to call them “plastic-free”.

Don’t worry, moonygreen dog poop bags have their certifications. They’ve acquired the ASTM D6400, European standard EN 13432, and OK Compost Home certifications to prove that they are truly biodegradable and compostable.

You can toss these bags in a home compost unit and expect them to start breaking down in just 90 days.

The company also claims that you can bury these bags, which would be amazing if it were proven. Unfortunately, there’s no data or certification to support the “bury your bags in the backyard” claim.

The bags themselves are thick, leak-proof, and moderately-sized at 9 x 13 inches (standard size). And to add icing on the cake, these bags come with a reusable dispenser.

The dispenser makes it easy to pull out poop bags on the go. It even comes with a carabiner-style clip that makes it easy to securely attach it to any leash. You won’t have to stick the dispenser in your pocket or anywhere else that would be uncomfortably awkward.

The only downside to the dispenser is that it doesn’t appear to be biodegradable or made from recycled materials. The fact that it’s reusable helps though, so long as it’s used plenty of times.

These bags are highly rated with an average of 4.8 out of 5 stars with 87 ratings. The seller is also very active and answers a variety of user-submitted questions, demonstrating their knowledge and expertise in the industry.

Common praise highlights the bags’ eco-friendly material, strength, durability, and leak-proof protection. Many users are satisfied with the bags’ performance and enjoy the fact that they are contributing to a greener, healthier world.

Common complaints point to the difficulty in opening the bags’ in extreme conditions (too hot, too cold) as well as just in general. Some pointed out that the perforations on the bags are a bit strange and can lead to accidental tears when separating the bags.

Overall, we believe that these bags offer unique advantages compared to their competitors. This puts them in the upper echelons of our list, though we do wish they can make EVERY aspect of their product super eco-friendly (looking at you, dispenser).

If you are looking for a dog poop bag that’s solid, simple, and reliable, then we recommend checking out mooneygreen dog poop bags.

7. Planet Poop Compostable Dog Poop Bags

Key Features:

  • Comes With Easy-To-Carry Handles
  • 100% Biodegradable And Compostable. ASTM D6400, EN13432, And OK Compost HOME TUV Austria Certified
  • Thick Dimensions And Large Depth = Perfect For Larger Dogs

Planet Poop Compostable Dog Poop Bags are both uniquely convenient and good for the environment. That’s a win-win in our books!

The bags are made from cornstarch, starch-based veggies like cassava, and a variety of other renewable resources. Put together, you get a bag that’s eco-friendly and safe for decomposition.

When these bags decompose, they break down into water, carbon dioxide, and biomass. No chemicals, no toxins, no GMOs, no polythene plastics, no artificial scents.

Certifications include ASTM D6400, EN13432 standard, and OK Compost HOME TUV Austria, which serves to prove the product’s claims of being biodegradable and compostable.

They can be composted at home, though the company doesn’t recommend it due to the harmful bacteria found in dog poop. They fully biodegrade in 90 days in a composting facility.

The company also claims that their bag will decompose in a landfill too, albeit at a slower rate. They recommend composting whenever possible for the best results, which we wholeheartedly agree with. Landfills just suck for biodegradation.

But how do the bags fare themselves?

For starters, these bags have a pretty great depth to them. This allows them to be better serve larger-sized dogs who have larger-sized poops. The bags a more “3-D” feel to them. They have a bit more “heft” to them, like a thick grocery bag.

And even with their thicker exterior, the bags don’t suffer from static issues and are easy to open.

You also have the privilege (yes, privilege. It’s that rare) of being able to use handles on your bags for easy carrying. It makes the carrying part of picking up dog poop way easier, especially since the odds of you touching poop goes down drastically with handles.

This product is highly rated. At the time of writing, it has a 4.7 out of 5 stars after 531 ratings on Amazon. Common praises highlight the bags’ eco-friendly nature, durability, and feel-good material. Users are especially appreciative of the bags’ ability to hold even the larger-sized dog droppings.

Common complaints point out the opening of the bags isn’t as large as it should be. While the bags are claimed to have a 9-inch opening, only about 6 or so inches of that is actually able to be opened. The rest is fettered off to the sides to serve as handles.

In the future, we would like to see the opening area become more expansive so that it can fit larger poop shovels.

Overall, these bags have a great handle on how to be eco-friendly while still offering a design that appeals to convenience. Seriously, those handles are amazing.

We highly recommend that you check out this bag if that appeals to you or if you have a larger dog that needs “a bit more” for their poop. You’ll be keeping the environment clean in more than one way!

8. Doodie Flush Dog Poop Bag

Key Features:

  • Able To Be Flushed Down The Toilet And Quickly Breaks Down In Water
  • Biodegradable And Compostable. ATSM D6400 Certified
  • 7.5 X 10.5 Inches, Made From Biodegradable/Water Soluble PVA, Very Durable

Everybody loves a good flushable wipe, so why not extend that love to your family canine? Doodie Flush Dog Poop Bags are one of the few high-quality, eco-friendly flushable bags on the market. These bags are also still biodegradable and compostable, giving you the maximum flexibility in how you want to dispose of your dog’s doo-doo.

The bags are made of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), a biodegradable polymer like that of starch-based polymers. While technically considered a plastic, it’s not bad for the environment. This is because PVA is water-soluble and will quickly break down in the presence of water.

The company does provide a video of the bags breaking down in the water in real-time. Customers have also conducted their own water solubility tests and have confirmed that the bags break down within minutes.

No need to worry about any nasty and expensive plumbing surprises from a clogged toilet.

As for biodegradability, the bags meet the ASTM D6400 standard. This proves that the bags can be composted within a reasonable timeframe at a dedicated composting facility. Please note that these bags should not be composted at home.

While this is a great certification to have, we would love to see more certifications down the line. You can never be too good for the environment.

As for bag performance, you won’t be disappointed. The bags come in a size of 7.5 x 10.5 inches, which is a bit smaller than the industry standard of 9 x 13 inches. Despite the smaller size, these bags are just as durable, sturdy, and leak-proof as some of the best eco-friendly dog poop bags.

You might be concerned that the bags aren’t leak-proof since they are designed to be flushable. After all, how can a bag that breaks down in water supposed to be able to hold moisture without immediately decomposing?

Thankfully, the company thought ahead and engineered their bags to only break down in the water. Nothing else will start the biodegradation process, leaving you in the clear to pick up poop without fear.

Doodie Flush dog poop bags are highly rated at 4.4 stars out of 5 with just 19 ratings on Amazon. While not swimming in reviews, it’s clear that these bags are doing something right so far.

Positive reviews highlight the bags’ quick degradation in water, sturdiness, and ease of use. People really seem to enjoy these bags. One reviewer commented that the bags held together while picking up snow and still broke down in toilet water.

There are some criticisms, however. Some users wished that they came in a roll instead of a box, as boxed bags are typically not compatible with dispensers. Other people enjoy the quality of the bag but don’t enjoy the higher price for how many bags you get. One person claimed that bags did not hold in the smell for long.

Overall, the bags are a fantastic option for people who prefer the convenience of flushing their dog’s poop. For smaller to medium-sized dogs, these bags will work perfectly. And with some care, they’ll work just fine for larger-sized dogs too.

We highly recommend that you check out Doodie Flush Dog Poop Bags.

9. Dujaca-Friendly Biodegradable Dog Poop Bags

Key Features:

  • Made From Cornstarch And Uses Recycled Cardboard Rolls
  • 100% Biodegradable And Compostable. TUV Austria Home Compost, ASTM D6400, And EN13432 Standard Certified
  • 9 X 13 Inches, Super Leak-Proof, Tight Seal Locks In Odors

Dujaca-Friendly Biodegradable Dog Poop Bags are high-performance, eco-friendly bags. If you are looking for bags that can stand up to the tougher jobs, then these will suit you well.

These bags are made from cornstarch, PBAT, and PLA. These copolymers give the bags the strength of traditional plastic while still being biodegradable and compostable. Dujaca-Friendly dog poop bags will fully decompose into carbon dioxide and water within 90 days in composting conditions.

Dujaca-Friendly dog poop bags are TUV Austria Home Compost, ASTM D6400, and EN13432 Standard certified. This means that these bags are given the “all-clear” to be 100% compostable in a dedicated composting facility or even in a home compost unit (though this is not recommended due to dangerous microbes found in dog poop).

The bags are 9 x 13 inches, 20 microns thick, and particularly good preventing any leaks. The bags are designed to leave plenty of space at the top for easy knot tying. Finally, the bags are engineered to contain liquids and moisture.

If you really wanted to, you could fill the bag with water not have a single drop leak out. No mess, no worries, no problems.

Once sealed (easy thanks to extra space at the top of the bag), the bags excel at locking in unwanted odors. The bags’ thickness creates a strong physical barrier that makes it tough for odors to get through. Users report smelling little to no odors after wrapping up their dog’s droppings.

The bags are rolled into a sturdy cardboard roll, which is made from recycled materials. This allows you to easily place the rolls into a dispenser.

User reviews have been highly positive at 4.9 out of 5 stars with 20 ratings. This product is fairly “green” (like the pun?) but is making great waves so far.

People enjoy the texture of the bags, the thickness they provide, the ease of use, and its eco-friendly composition. Many reviewers comment that you get a lot of value (# of high-quality bags) for the price.

One person mentioned that they can be a bit of a challenge to open but went on to say that most poop bags shared that problem.

Overall, Dujaca-Friendly biodegradable dog poop bags are a solid addition to any eco-friendly dog poop lineup. For the bigger, messier jobs, these bags are great. They can hold a lot of poop, liquid, and don’t release any of the foul odors associated with dog waste.

There’s not much to complain about! If you are looking for a reliable eco-friendly dog poop bag focused on handling bigger messes, then you need to check out Dujaca-Friendly Biodegradable Dog Poop Bags.

10. Zoorenity Compostable Dog Waste Bags

Key Features:

  • Minimum 10% Of Proceeds Go To Motely Zoo Animal Rescue
  • 100% Compostable And Biodegradable. Made From Cornstarch+PLA+PBAT And ATSM D6400 Certified
  • Leak-Proof, Easy To Open, And Unscented

Zoorenity Compostable Dog Waste Bags are one of the few biodegradable dog poop bags that support the environment, donate to animal rescue, and provide a high-quality experience.

The bags are made from cornstarch, PLA, and PBAT. This formulation is common among the biodegradable bag industry but is still no less effective.

PLA and PBAT are polymers (a form of plastic) that quickly degrade into natural materials in composting conditions. We already know that cornstarch is biodegradable, and we’re glad to see it in these bags.

These bags have met ATSM D6400 standards. This means that they are proven to decompose within a reasonable timespan in dedicated composting facilities.

It will take longer for these bags to decompose in landfills (as all biodegradable bags do), but they’ll still break down into natural materials.

Please note that the company states that their bags shouldn’t be used for home garden composts due to the presence of dangerous microbes in dog poop waste.

What’s truly amazing about using these bags is that you’ll be directly supporting the animal rescue industry. Zoorentiy contributes no less than 10% of their total earnings to Motley Zoo Animal Rescue.

You’re helping these guys rescue homeless pets and contributing towards a plastic-free environment just by buying these bags. That’s a win-win in our opinion!

Quality isn’t an afterthought for these bags either. They are considered leak-proof, easy to open, unscented, and can lock in smells. The bags are 8.5 x 12 inches, which is slightly smaller than the industry standard of 9 x 13. At 15 microns of thickness, these bags are great holding in small to medium quantities of poop.

User reviews have been mostly positive. This product averages 4.5 out of 5 stars with 48 ratings on Amazon at the time of writing.

Positive reviewers noted the bags’ material is sturdy and dispenses easily. Other people have noted that the bags maintain their integrity even in extreme weather conditions, which was a huge bonus. They also note the high value of the bags in comparison to the cost.

However, there were some concerns. Some users noted that the odor from very smelly poop tends to get through the bags. Other people believed that the bags were too flimsy and tore easily when on a run.

It seems like there are mixed experiences on the strength and durability of these bags, but there have been more good people saying the bags are strong than not.

Overall, these bags are wonderful because they treat animals, the environment, and loving pet owners with the respect they deserve. We couldn’t ask for much more.

If you are interested in a biodegradable, eco-friendly dog poop bag that goes above and beyond in a variety of ways, then you need to check out Zoorenity Compostable Dog Waste Bags.

What to Look Out for When Picking Biodegradable & Eco-Friendly Dog Poop Bags:

What The Bag Is Made Out Of (Composition)

When picking out the perfect eco-friendly poop bag for your dog, you want to make sure that the bag is actually made of earth-friendly materials.

Nothing is worse than slick marketing that sells you a bag that isn’t actually good for the environment. Just because the bag is green doesn’t mean that it’s eco-friendly.

Any good company will tell you upfront what their bag is made from.

The most common “green” materials that manufacturers use are EPI plastics, plant-based polymers like polylactic acid (PLA) made from cornstarch, recycled materials and biodegradable copolymers (PBAT).

There are even some dog poop bags that are water-soluble and can be flushed down the toilet, but we won’t cover those here.

Let’s talk a bit about each one and give you an overview on how each of them are considered “eco-friendly”.

EPI Plastics:

Now, you might see “EPI plastics” and wonder how plastic can be biodegradable. That’s a fair question and one that we had to ask ourselves, too!

Bascially, EPI is a company that specializes in oxo-biodegradable plastic technology. Their plastic is infused with something called TDPA (Totally Degradable Plastic Additive). Yes, that’s really what the acronym stands for.

TDPA speeds up the chemical reaction responsible for biodegradation. We’re talking 100 to 1000 times faster, which allows the plastic to fully decompose within a few weeks to 1-2 years. The range seems large, but you have to keep in mind that this is accounting for large plastic products too.

You can find a cool, in-depth explanation here.

Dog poop backs made with EPI plastic tend to biodegrade within 6 months to a year depending on the environment, which is great when compared to a plastic water bottle’s 1000+ years.

There are claims that oxo-biodegradation with EPI technology results in micro-plastics, which could still be harmful to the environment. The impact that microplastics have on EPI plastic is still miles better than traditional plastic, but this is a valid concern to keep in mind.

Polylactic acid (PLA) and Polybutylene Adipate Terephthalate (PBAT):

When companies want to market their products as “eco-friendly” but still want the benefits of plastic, they typically use PLA or PBAT.

PLA is a bioplastic, meaning that it’s made from natural resources. PLA is typically made from renewable resources, such as cornstarch (predominantly in the U.S.A.)sugarcane (predominantly the rest of the World), and even tapioca roots (predominantly in Asia).

Since PLA is comprised of natural resources, it’s possible for microorganisms to feed on it and turn it into compost. It’s also susceptible to biodegradation through natural elements like sunlight and air.

And when strengthened with additives, it can survive rigorous manufacturing processes. Its strength as a plastic while also being biodegradable puts PLA in a strong position for both manufacturers and consumers.

PLA has its drawbacks, however.

While it will always technically biodegrade, it will really only do so within a reasonable time frame in certain environments.

If you were to put a product that contained PLA in a secluded room with no access to environmental elements, it will last hundreds of years. Landfills simulate this example, since they are anaerobic environments (no air).

People who oppose PLA point to this problem, claiming that consumers are misled to believing that products made with PLA will biodegrade anywhere. They also note that when PLA starts to decompose on its own, it releases methane gas. This gas is a huge contributor towards global warming.

It’s better to compost PLA whenever possible, as PLA will biodegrade within a year or two in these conditions (humid, 60 C, lots of microorganisms, exposed to air, etc.).

PBAT, on the other hand, is a biodegradable copolymer. It’s partially derived from petrochemicals, yip, and oil.

That may seem scary, but understand that PBAT will readily compost and decompose without leaving any trace of plastic or chemical pollution. In composting conditions, PBAT can show up to 90% degradation within 90 days.

You can use a home compost unit specialized in pet waste or find an industrial compost facility that processes pet waste. Both will work wonders with PLA or PBAT.

Recycled Materials:

Dog poop bags made from recycled materials often feature consumer-used plastic. Out of all the eco-friendly materials, this one best exemplifies what it means to live a “zero waste” lifestyle.

Recycled materials, usually plastics, have the advantage of being sturdy, thick, and strong. After all, it’s functionally similar to traditional plastic. And as much as we begrudge how bad traditional plastic is for the environment, we concede that it’s highly useful.

Dog poop bags made from recycled materials get the best of both worlds. They are inherently eco-friendly by keeping plastic out of oceans, landfills, and nature in general while also cutting down on plastic production.

But recycled materials present their own set of problems.

The biggest problem is that dog poop bags made from recycled materials tend to end the recycling life cycle. While it’s technically possible to recycle these bags, few people actually do.

After all, it would require them to clean the bags of poop before recycling them. It’s easier to just throw them away, which ultimately puts them in a landfill.

Recycled materials are also non-biodegradable and non-compostable. They won’t break down for hundreds of years, even in the best of environmental conditions. The moment they stop being used by consumers is the moment that they are no better than regular plastic.

That being said, they are still useful as an eco-friendly alternative to traditional plastic. As long as recycled plastic continues to be recycled, there will be less harmful waste hurting the Earth.

Flushable Materials:

Who says that dog poop can’t be flushed down the toilet?

While it can be strange to think about at first, it actually makes a lot of sense. The sewer designed to process this kind of waste. Using your toilet was a waste dispenser is a perfectly valid option.

Some dog poop bag companies recognize this and have created flushable bags. These bags are typically lined with a form of toilet paper, while the outer part of the bag is made of polyethylene (also known as PE) plastic.

The paper part of the bag detaches from the biodegradable PE plastic, ready to be flushed with the dog poop. Simple and easy!

However, it’s important to note that PE plastic CANNOT be flushed down the toilet. There are also a few more things to know about PE.

Traditional PE cannot biodegrade, be composted, or easily recycled.

Biodegradable PE usually manifests itself as a thin film that’s biodegradable and compostable. It’s still hard to recycle, though. This type of PE still requires environmental elements to truly decompose, just like PLA.

Most eco-friendly flushable dog poop bags are made from biodegradable PE, but it’s always important to check and make sure.

Price and Value

Few things are as important to people as the cost of a good or service. Luckily, biodegradable and eco-friendly dog poop bags are relatively inexpensive.

Be careful with buying too cheap. Very inexpensive bags are more prone to tears, leaks, and other annoyances that could ruin a lovely walk with your dog. Nobody wants to pick up dog poop only to have it rip through the bag and potentially get all over you.

But also don’t be tricked into thinking that a higher price tag means a better bag. While higher-quality bags are usually priced higher, they may not be what you need.

If you have a tiny dog with small poops, then you probably won’t need the double reinforced, super thick bags with turbo poop-holding action. But larger dogs with bigger poops may need something like that.

We recommend stocking up on larger packs, especially if you are a frequent dog walker. You’ll save more money in the long run by buying in bulk.

Odor-Blocking Power

Let’s face it: dog poop stinks! Even the most beloved canine companion can leave you an unpleasantly smelly gift. Yuck!

Having a dog poop bag that can contain these odors is essential. No one wants to be carrying around a stink bomb, but it’s way better when you can’t smell the bomb in action.

Different dog bags block odor in different ways. Some of them neutralize the odor with chemicals and pleasant-smelling alternatives (lavender, anyone?). Others create an air-tight physical barrier between the inner and outer parts of the bag.

Overall, it’s a matter of personal preference.

If you have allergies and are sensitive to chemical smells, then it’s better to go with an unscented bag. We also favor unscented bags because they have fewer chemicals that would negatively impact the environment.

But if you want to be absolutely sure that the smell is gone, odor neutralization is the way to go.

Either way, choosing a dog poop bag that has the power to hold back those smells is too important to overlook. Your nose will thank you later!

Durability

We aren’t going to tell you to go out and get the strongest eco-friendly dog poop bag in the world. But we will tell you that it’s better to have a more durable bag than a less durable one.

You should choose a bag that has the appropriate durability/thickness for your dog. This entirely depends on your dog and their poops.

Generally, the size of the dog dictates the durability that you will need. It’s a simple equation:

Big dog = big poop

Medium dog = medium poop

Small dog = small poop

The larger the poop, the more durable bag you’ll need. Eco-friendly dog poop bags tend to trend towards the smaller size, but there are plenty of larger, thicker bags for bigger dogs.

A regular-sized bag works well for most dogs (small and medium dog poop). This is around 9 x 13 inches.

For larger dogs, we recommend a size of around 10 x 14 inches. Bags close to this dimension usually have the thickness required to handle larger poop. Be warned that it’s difficult to find eco-friendly bags that are larger than 9 x 13 inches (the closest we found was 9 x 13.5 inches). They also tend to be more expensive, too.

You also need to keep in mind just how often your dog actually does the deed. A medium-sized dog that is extremely regular might need a bigger bag, for example.

Leak Protection

You might be thinking, “Well golly, why would I need leak protection for my dog’s poop? Isn’t it supposed to be solid?”

Yes, there’s some truth to that. But fresh dog poop is rarely completely solid. There’s typically some moisture locked into the waste, giving it a somewhat malleable form.

You don’t want the moisture to seep through the dog poop bag and create leaks. If that happens, you’ll be exposed to the concentrated smell of wet dog poop and might even get some of it on you. That’s definitely not a fun time, especially in the middle of walk with no shower in sight.

Some companies will specify whether or not they have dedicated leak protection. Others simply build leak protection into the durability of the bag.

If the company claims that their bags are super durable and can prove it (usually through customer review), then it likely has serviceable leak protection.

Watch out for cheaply-made bags, though. They can easily leak and cause gross problems. You can usually spot these by them having a super-low price for the amount of bags that you get.

Special Features

Some dog poop bags come with added special features that help set them apart from the competition.

These features include quality-of-life improvements like built-in handles, safeguards for picking up the poop, included accessories, special dispensers, and much more.

These are all fine-n-dandy as long as they don’t interfere with the bags eco-friendly nature.

If one brand stands out to you due to its unique features, by all means!

Just know that the more special features a bag has, the pricier it tends to be. Don’t be tricked into thinking that special features make a bag worth twice the price. It’s still just supposed to be an eco-friendly way to dispose of dog poop.

It doesn’t have to be complicated.

And that’s it! Phew, that’s a lot of poop bags! We hope that you found our comprehensive list useful and decide to check out some of products on our list. We know that you’ll love them!
